Those 790s are so gorgeous. I also like how you are brand agnostic...play what works!

Eddie I put an extra weight in my tsi3 driver , factory weight one spot toe of center and a +8 one spot heel of center (55g shaft cut down 3/4 of an inch give me a good swingweight with the +8) and man does that thing fly a lot more consistent. I was hitting just off the toe, and they were getting great heigh and only moving 3-5 yards of target. You could probably tell from the tee impact i only had 2 bad drives all day.
what playing length are you playing at?
in other news, it’s funny how a small change can make a huge difference.
had lead tape on the 3 wood to have it at d4 because I wanted to experiment with heavier swing weight per someone’s suggestion, took the tape off back down to d2 and it’s back to being money. Crazy what a few strips of tape can do to the mind.
I might reduce a little swing weight on the UW as well to see if that does the trick.
im anti red, so had to go my stealth.
going to be tough to beat the tsi3 but will be testing over the next week.
So the latest round of failed experiments.
Stealth+: I fight a push off the tee, and in the chase for distance, I said let me go down in loft but set the head to higher loft/closed face, should be perfect right?
Was pretty much a fail. The stealth plus head feels pretty damn good, but just couldn't spin a 9 degree head enough.
G425 hybrid: pretty good feeling club, but one weird thing I noticed on the golf course is because the head is so shallow, if you hit it out of the first cut and catch it a touch high on the shallow head, it has very little spin. Also because it's so shallow, wasn't comfortable hitting it off a tee for fears of roofing it
The things that are working.
I looked at my stats from the last few rounds I've played this year and the majority of lost strokes come from two areas: off the tee with less than driver and bunker play.
So I was on a mission to put as many clubs that I can comfortably hit off the tee as possible.
Went back to the 300 mini driver as three wood replacement. Don't know why I ever took it out. I barely tee it off the ground, maybe a quarter inch, hit down on the ball, get a nice high flight that has plenty of spin to hold its line.
Stealth + frankenwood.
The idea here was that the apex UW was a pretty good club and got me thinking.
There's a 2 iron. What's longer and more forgiving than a 2i?
Hybrid. What's longer and more forgiving than a hybrid?
Apex UW. What's longer and more forgiving than a UW?
7 wood.
But the 7 woods I hit spun a little too much for me, and I need that club to be able to have an extra gear to cover the lack of a 3 wood for me.
Enter
5 wood, set to 19.75 degrees, but a low spin head, playing at 41.5", so I can play it like a hybrid with 3/4 swings, but also really stretch it to go after yardage.
And it's got a decently deep face so I have no worries about roofing it off the tee.
and Tsi3 still remains the best overall driver I've played in years.
Eddie my 2 iron experiment hopefully begins at the end of this month with the P790 UDI. I’ve made some swing changes that have worked out great so far but the result is that I can’t stop hooking my hybrid off the planet. I don’t even take it out of the bag anymore, it’s just taking up space
P790 UDI is really good and as long as you try not to hit it differently than it's designed (ala hit a high ball), it's tough to beat. If you get to a point where you want just a little more height take a look at the u505. I have a UDI, u500 and u505 all at home, not selling any of them but they are always on standby. Let's try to get out and play before the end of the season.
In a weird place with the driver, I’m able to turn the ball over with every club in my bag except the tsi3.
so in a move that makes zero sense, I put the most fade biased driver I have at home, sim 1, cranked it to two notches higher and weight jammed in the heel, with a tipped Ventus blue.
hit it great. Dead straight for 10 of the 12 drives I hit with it, with one ball more than 5 yards off my start line.
the shallower head helps keep my tee height down and less inclined to try to hit up on it. Visually still my favorite driver of all time, good to know it’s playable too.
Then put a black di7 driver in the mini driver, feels a little light in the hands but too early to tell.
Club championship qualifying is getting close, so needing to stop tinkering and practice more.
Driver I’ll be going with is so unlikely, a friend recently got a Rogue ST triple diamond LS. I hit a few balls with it and fell in love. What an underrated head. It’s far less fade biased than a TM driver, and surprisingly low spin on mishits. I’m trying to figure out what about this club clicks with me, I think part of it is he has it at 45”, I’ve been playing all my stuff 45 3/8”.
Funniest thing is the shaft is god knows how old Mitsubishi Ahina. Going to play his driver through club championship.
Di7 in the mini driver is awesome, can’t live without that club now, so consistent.
im seeing some club speed increases now that I’m starting to regularly hit balls, the only thing I’m scared of now is distance control with the 790s, I’m used to having max distances when hitting full but now I can see anywhere from 5-10 more yards through the set.
