At that price point, i would look more boutique watchmakers, to get more for your dollar. Also with boutique brands, you will get more interesting designs than a standard seiko or citizen product.
For example, here's a small watchmaker called Brew. Their brand is built off timepieces and pulling espresso shots, if he likes coffee, this would be a more impactful gift, if that makes sense. And at $375.
Not saying you have to get this watch, but you get the idea. A lot of smaller up and coming watchmakers at competitive price points are out there.
