Help with loft sleeve adjustment. Very lost.

I have a serious no-troll question. After many years of using adjustable clubs, I was talking to other friends and realized that I actually don't know how they work. Yes, I've looked at many charts, watched Youtube videos, but at the heart of it, I need an ELI5 version of how these adapters work.

This is my understanding (using the TM loft sleeve as an example):

I have a 9 degree SIM head. I adjust the loft sleeve to add more loft. The face angle is now more closed. However, what does this actually mean? At address, what happens if I just set the club down? Is it playing at 9.5* now, but with a closed face angle? What happens if I square the face? Is it not 9.5*, but back at the original 9 degrees?

I'm super confused, and the more I hear and read about it, the more confused I get. Basically, I have a super high ball flight and wanted to adjust loft down on my TS3 driver. I understand Titleist has their Surefit system, but gist is, turning loft down opens the face.

I just want to know how to get my lofted down setup without having an open face. Same with going the other way - how to get more loft without it being closed. Or, if this is just not how it works/not possible.

Taylormade’s sleeve does not separate face angle and loft so adding loft closes the face. So if you had a 9 degree head, set it one closed. It would be closed at address. But if you hit that club square at impact, it’s effectively having more loft at impact because since it was closed at address, you are turning the face closed less to square at impact.

when the TM is set to open, returning that club to square requires more closure, hence less effectively loft at impact.

With regards to Titleist, the multi piece adapter’s merit is that face angle and loft are supposed to be independent. I’m not sure the nuances to that, but when I played Titleist drivers, I believed in the tech.

I’m with you! I’ve read Tom Wishon’s explanation several times. The concept from what I understand is it sets up closed forcing you to square up at impact which raises loft. I think. I have no clue, I just play it in standard sleeve setting. Golf is hard enough to worry about the 192,000 different configurations you can set up a driver with.

Okay, that was very helpful! But, what about if I square the club at address? Then it wouldn't be open/closed. Would it be at the new loft? I assume so, given your explanation about the clubface at impact.

I’m no expert but my take is this.

face is closed at address.

you forward press to square face.

Provided that that forward press doesn’t alter the dynamics of your swing (your hand position at impact), then the forward press to make the face square shouldn’t have a bearing.

But could it? Sure.
