Leave it as-is or like J mentioned, clean it up and seal it with an oil. Just like detailing paintwork, let the pad do the work. Gun oil like old school Remmy will work to protect the newly raw steel. No need to go out and get silicone spray if you have Remmy on hand. The patina you have on it already is protecting the steel so just knocking off that scaly buildup will be plenty.
