Topic of the Morning: What is up with Rory Scoring Irons?

Watching replay of the second round as I inject caffeine to survive the day ... Could Rory be too low spin right now? Possibly his ball?

It boggles my mind that someone like Rory can struggle as mightily as he has with his scoring irons for as long as he has. My thought is that not only does he seem to jump on every new club release he’s doing the same with the ball. I’ll admit I have done this countless times (and will continue with equipment as I love it), but am making a concerted effort this year to stay with the ball I used last year so I know it’s something else as I struggle on the course.

HungoverGoose13 wondering, randomly, if the scoring club issue gets back to working with plane mate and shallowing path. But he has also been south of north and east and west off the tee as well. Plus his putting sucks. He’s a nice kid though.

HungoverGoose13 I know he switched from the TP5X to the TP5 in the previous generation because the X just could not spin enough. That was addressed supposedly in this new version which is why guys were moving back to the TP5X.

IMO its hard to put the blame on that. Too many TM guys are putting up dubs with the same situations. I do however think that Rory is somewhat of a mental midget inside 120 yards and on the greens. That's never changed. I didn't see what putter he was using this week but I know he do like to try to get back to blades. I feel like his runs were done with Mid mallets. Could def be wrong though.

HungoverGoose13 I deal with tech orders at work all the time that have MOSTLY blank pages in them that say in the middle of the page: THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK. But it's not left blank, because now there's these words on it, so it's not actually blank at all...how many shots of espresso did you say was in this?

Kevin - I won't even begin to try and dissect Rory's issues on the course but he could always try drinking more White Claws. Seems to work for you!

My morning rambling for today is i want a donut and I cannot decide between a Krispy Kreme or a Duck Donut. The KK is not as dense and I can eat more of them but I feel like I am a snob with those things bc if the hot sign is not on then I think it’s pointless.

Noyes26 Think the explanation that makes the most sense is that chasing greater speed and distance has hurt him far more than it's helped. His muscle memory has got some glitches in it, and that shows up under tournament conditions. I think he, and a good many others, panicked a bit when Bryson won the US Open thinking that if he could do that to an Open set-up then there's no telling what he'll do elsewhere but it hasn't really panned out that way. The Bryson Way may not be as much the way forward as it might have appeared, and those that took a wait and see approach instead of jumping immediately into the distance arms race are being proven the wiser.

Noyes26 great points here noyes. Just so strange to me especially how DJ seemed to be able to really dial in his wedges etc via trackman.

I have someone who I consider a younger brother to me who has Rory type 180 speed, D1 UVA 4 year player, flashes of web.com skill, but never panned out.

I even caddied for him during Q school to see his game under pressure.

75-130 yard shots was the absolute death of him.

textbook swing, amazing speed, but under pressure couldn’t control distance.

Something about having that much speed and essentially having to throttle down.

having seen how difficult that can be, I’m so amazed at the way DJ plays the game.

I've long said Bryson is a "horses for courses" type of player. The US Open at Winged Foot is a perfect example because the fairways were so tight that nobody was hitting them, which made raw distance and putting — two things he excels at — more important than anything else that week.

He'll do really well on tracks that don't have a lot of uneven lies (his irons are too long) but as you could see from Augusta National, which is kind of a "width and angles" type of course, he ends up in a lot of weird places that don't offer an advantage over playing the hole as it was designed.
