dphatt I feel like he gets a bad rap. If you can't see the ball land, walk up to it playing in soft conditions, playing in a tourney, you do what he did. Without cameras, you can't say for sure he saw that ball bounce.

dbenick3 when I am playing in an event and I have a questionable lie I would call my playing partner over to see if he concurs with what I see before even touching the ball. If he doesn’t agree then I would call over an official. I would never make my own judgement on that if it’s iffy. It’s the same thing before last years rule change about tapping marks down. I would always ask if they agreed if it was a ball mark that can be fixed.

If I had a rep like PReed I would make sure no one could question what I did.

is this over blown? Yes, but he could have helped his cause by not moving the ball before an official or playing partner looked at it

So, I got home from my round (and some drinks) and hear the story. I heard Reed tell his side and thought "that makes sense". Then, I finally watched the video. WTF. Honestly, nothing about what he did made sense to me. You don't just pick your ball up before calling over a playing partner or rules official. Just my opinion of course, but I would think that about anyone doing it (Reed just magnifies the issue).

"It's an unfortunate situation, obviously, but at the end of the day, when you finish the round and the head rules official comes up to you and has the video and shows everything that went down to the whole group and says that you've done this perfectly, you did this the exact right way, the protocols you did were spot on -- at that point, I feel great about it."

The odd thing is that he not only picked it up but then he put it like 10’ away instead of putting it back where he lifted it from. I’ve seen lots of embedded ball situations but none where the player sets the ball somewhere else before getting a ruling.

I feel like the odd guy out but I just don’t see anything wrong with what he did. Maybe he doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt but it seems like people are looking for anything to slam him. Rules official said embedded, he played it that way. To me, end of story. Is there a camera shot of him pushing down on the ball? That’s all that would change my mind. And I’m sick of the holier than thou broadcasters saying what they would have done - BS! if I was Reed, I’d ask for a rules official on every single shot today, next week, and forever going forward.

rrkman I don’t think so. The whole sequence was odd and I guess when he set the ball over by his bag instead of in the spot, it certainly raised a red flag. I agree that it’s popular to slam him and he has a history. Just looked like he manipulated the situation a little bit. Right, wrong, or indifferent the sequence of events left me thinking “what is happening?!?!”

Adding the Rory video today leaves me pretty stumped. I think it comes down to body of work afterward AND the fact that he pushed his fingers in there. Would probably have less issue with it if they guy even addressed it half way. But he is “perfect”

What I find most depressing about Reed is that in theory, he would be a fun guy to root for. Doesn't bomb it, decent iron player and an absurd short game.
