maxbianchi Definitely don't have immortal like shafts!
TXG did a test on the three wood shaft. This is one club I would not be interested to try after seeing their test. The last thing I would want to see is a three wood going left for me. It’s also funny how they tested with a longer length shaft and less loft. Of course they are going to see improvements in distance and swing speed.
Today was a bad driving day for me so this is what I wanted to see with the AF. I still can’t seem to dial in the proper height with this shaft as I get balloon balls on some shots and flat ones with other. I did have some high right misses with it today which was a first. I spent some more time on the range with it and I noticed that I would lift up on it more which I think causes the high rights. When I stayed down on it more I was getting high draws with it. The experiment will continue for a few more rounds before I decide on keeping this or going with the Ventus
So does this bother anyone or am I being too picky. Both were hit solid but the spin numbers are a good 500rpm different. They were both on a rope though
I also took a few swings with both shafts and the results were similar but the accuracy was better with the AF. Go figure.
Same head same length?
Results matter
dphatt it wouldn’t bother me. I think as long as they are in the fairway and not spinning a ridiculous amount I would play it. 5 yards probably doesn’t even change the club you are hitting into the green
Another day another test of the Autoflex. Today I had the left misses instead of the rights. The left misses went far but they were pretty offline. This is also the first time I have been yelled at by the group in front of me saying I was hitting into them on the green from the tee box. I didn’t hit one green and the closest I got was about 5 yards from the green. The rest were like 30-40 yards from the green. Most of these holes were 375-400 yards. I don’t consider myself a long hitter and it was also very windy out and I caught some big gusts. I am going to give this shaft one more week and if I cannot get better consistency with it then this experiment will be over.
I've tested AutoFlex enough to know it isn't for me. In the interest of keeping the peace, I'll just say I wasn't impressed and leave it at that.
@dphatt I got to test it in the '21 Callaway driver heads because a friend of mine picked one up. To be fair it was not the 505XX which would have probably given it a better chance but to me it just felt rubbery (which is a descriptor I've never used for any other shaft) for lack of a better term and like it was going to just float away if I didn't hold on to it. Misses were all over the lot, and even when I struck it well it just didn't have much to offer me.
I get that it's a fun color and it's kind of the mysterious, pretty new girl at the school dance, but it's a fitting philosophy issue as much as anything. If I'm going to pay top dollar for a piece of kit like that, I want it to be engineered to get out of the way and let me play the best golf I'm capable of playing. I don't want to have to make changes to my (ahem) already somewhat functional swing to accommodate what the shaft is bringing to the equation. It's supposed to be the other way around, and I have enough to deal with getting my ball around the yard without looking like a complete doofus. I also think you can achieve similar fitting effects with shafts that come at a much more reasonable price tag, but at the same time understand that luxury items like this are part of the chase and the fun of being a gear junkie.
I get the curiosity and can appreciate that it will have good effects for some, but I simply am not one of them and I have to wonder if we'll be looking back at the whole "Hidden Technology" thing and laughing in the not too distant future. But maybe not, I'm wrong about such things all the time and if you don't believe me you can ask Mrs. Chubbs.
From Fit2Score. A profile and measurement based look at the autoFlex. Hilarious to me that the XX most closely matched a 50g series S flex shaft, which was actually marginally stiffer.
Most Shaft companies send in review samples. Korea Hidden Technology never replied to the request for review samples. A great many golf fitters have professional subscriptions to my software and were interested in seeing the profile of the autoFlex shafts. One of them provided a shaft to be added to the database. The profile is no longer hidden.
Radial consistency was very good at 99.2%. In my world a stiffness rating of 13 does not merit an XX flex designation. Over the past few days I have the pleasure of fitting several golfer with low single digit handicaps and 110+ mph swing speeds. When they swing hard it took an EI rating of 19 and a tip torque of 2.3 to keep the head from going walk about. I will never believe that a wet noodle like this would fit any of these golfers. XX = LOL
My software found a very close match to the autoFlex 505 XX. It was the discontinued Mitsubishi Bassara GG 53 S from around 2014. At the time it retailed for $300. I just checked eBay and found some new Bassara GG’s for $175. If you want to see what this autoFlex $750 shaft feels like, get the Bassara GG’s before they are gone and save yourself $500.
KentonQ this review sounds like a person who is more sour that a company didn’t send them a shaft to review for free. Autoflex never states that the 505XX is a double X shaft flex. It is just the name of the shaft. They rate their shafts by swing speed and not flex so to call it a XX “flex” is not fair. The fact that you have pros like Adam Scott, Mike Weir, Ernie Els and Fred Couples testing or playing it should speak volumes that there is something to it. Like every shaft out there, does it fit everyone? Of course not. Is it worth trying and testing? Absolutely. The speed gains I have seen on not only myself but others are eye opening and cannot be ignored. I have built a good amount of Grand Bassara shafts for a few customers and they are great but the shaft is a lot thinner than the Autoflex and would not be able to stand the load. The Grand Bassara even comes with a warning label stating to not knife the shaft while prepping for fear it might break.
I am still testing this shaft and I will continue to report the good and bad with it. I feel like the only way to really evaluate this is to not just test it for a day or a week but at least a month.
I see so many people bashing the price of this shaft while they buy the latest or greatest new golf club each and every year rocking their Rolex, driving their Mercedes to their Country Club. It’s all relative.
I see Autoflex as a company that is similar to PXG. Push the envelope in technology so the others will have to follow which is better for us, the consumer. They need to make their money now because by next year the bigger shaft manufacturers will have their own version of this shaft for cheaper.
I am getting off my soapbox now and I hope this is some good toilet bowl reading material
Interesting reads from both sides.
