The 4 Iron Dilemma

I have a 4 iron dilemma.

Since I setup my bag to play long courses, the 4 iron spot is always the one I seem to spend the most time thinking about.

With the 790s, I kept the set 4 iron because I knew I could cover the right distance with it. It did fly a little lower than I liked, so holding greens with a 4 iron from 215 was not always likely, but I knew I could fly it that number, so at least I can get there.

For the 770 set, I had less faith in it before it got here and picked up a u500. The u500 is a good club, and with the 90g Hzrdus shaft (I play the 80g Hzrdus shaft in my hybrid), it seemed to make sense on paper.

For me, if I like equipment I know after a few swings. On paper the u500 should be a perfect bridge between 5i and my hybrid. I can definitely stretch out the max distance of the 4i slot with the u500, I can get one to go a little farther if necessary.

But the p770 4 iron is soooooooo good. It's good because I hit it with more height than I did the 790 (lofts were matched). If this were the MCs, I'm sure I wouldn't even think twice and put something more forgiving than the MC in the 4 iron slot. The 770 5i has a ton of height on it too.

The u500 has to be more forgiving, it's bigger, wider sole, etc.. It's almost like having a second hybrid in the bag.

But for some reason it wasn't an instant put it in the bag kind of thing.

Part of me just wants to enjoy the p770 feel and frankly really good height and consistent yardage.

Then I look at Rory's bag and see he plays blades but at the 4i slot he changes to the 760, something one step more forgiving than the regular irons. (

I don't know lol. These are the things I think for fun about to escape the stress of real life.

I know the hybrid iron is the right answer, but I love hitting the 770, only keep one is my rule so have to decide.

I would play the 770 4i if you are hitting it well. Your confidence will continue to go up the more time you spend with it. I prefer not to have a different look at address with my irons with the exception of my UDI, but the UDI is more of a tee club for me anyway, or for the times I am 250 out on a par 5 with nothing guarding the entryway into the green and I can run it up.

ckay pretty much my thoughts.... I'd keep going with the 4 iron if it were me for 2 reasons. Hitting it well and consistent looks.

i love my u500 4 iron and I have hit some sick shots in tournaments so it’s a keeper.

I have a similar dilemma the reason I can’t get rid of my Nike Vapor Pro Combos is because I love the 4 iron. I would err on the side of forgiveness as long as the miss isn’t a hook with the U500

I have a few juiced 4 irons...P790, Mizuno HMB, G410 Crossover, TMB...and I always seem to hit the 4 iron best from whatever set I'm playing. I actually ordered my Miura TC201's 5-PW and now I'm wishing I ordered a 4 iron too. I have full confidence in the TC201 5i but not 4i HMB per se. I don't know what it is...maybe I don't get along with the larger sole? Also I feel like the lack of feel on the beefier clubs contributes to lack of confidence as you aren't really sure where you are getting it on the face...even on good hits somewhat.

I’m a + handicap and I’ve put my ego aside. I have an LPGA Setup with 7 wood and 4 hybrid.

every time I go back to a driving iron, I start missing more greens on long par 3’s and into par 5’s. The hybrid and 7 wood have been CASH on these holes.

albeit, I just got a 4 iron as part of my SEL Setup, ill see how that goes next season...

Thanks for the responses, the only thing that was tripping me up was that I am hitting the 770 higher for sure, so should be better for approach shots.

The u500 does give me an extra option at 205 all the way up to 230 because it definitely has an extra gear to it, so through club championship I’m going u500 especially on the longer layout.
