We had our second round A team matches today. I was playing at a course I had never played and I heard it was really quirky. I played the absolute worst round of the year. I was +7 through my first 4 holes. I don’t think I would have broken 90 today. My partner carried me and we lost on 17. My round included topped irons and three woods and a chunked putt. I lost about 4 balls. I mean this course really mind fucked me and I was not comfortable all day but that’s not a good enough excuse. Our A team ended up losing by one point and took the blame for this as I played like pure trash. I sold my irons after the round for cheap. It was that or throw them in the water and trust me I was very close. Back to the old p790s with Modus 120s.
I went back to the Epic Flash TD and the old P790s and shot an easy -4. I will probably end the year with this setup and reevaluate the driver and irons early next year. I just don’t get how I can go from almost not breaking 90 to sub 70 in less than 24 hours. I really hate this game. I will post my last WITB for the year next week.
The last two days I played in the Middle Atlantic Senior event at Fountain Head Country Club. Wait, when did I turn into a Senior? They had a pre-senior division (40-54). This used to be 44-54 but they dropped it to 40 this year so I entered. I knew this course was really short, tight and had greens that were tiny with a lot of undulation. I had never played there and I didn’t have time for a practice round. As you can see my scores on the first 11 holes showed my frustration with the course. I had no clue where to hit it and I couldn’t figure out the greens. The on 10 came from a great drive that disappeared. None of us could find the ball so I headed back to the tee. I snap hooked the tee shot and expected to not find that ball. I already had it in my head that if this ball was lost I would be going home. We found the ball and I continued to play. I bogeyed 11 and was on pace to shoot 80+. I finished 12-18 2 under that included a birdie and an eagle. I was 4 strokes off of the lead.
On to today and I told myself that I knew the course now and should play what the course gives me. I shot 68 with three birdies and an eagle and I had to wait to see if that was good enough. The leader didn’t play well but the guy who was in second shot 72 which tied me for first.
We went to the first playoff hole and I won’t go into details but I bogeyed from the middle of the fairway inside 75 yards. I bogeyed that first hole all three times in two days.
I am happy I played well enough to come back and I am not disappointed in second as it was only a $50 difference.
My first 11 holes I was +9. My last 25 holes I was -5. Who doesn’t love/hate this game?
Jaybananapantsarthur I have the TGI 100 in the 4 iron. It’s definitely soft but I don’t mind that I’m the 4 iron. I definitely could not play a set of these.
titleistforged I had the 2019 p790s with MMT shafts for a good part of the year. They ended up being not what I wanted and I just went back to my old set. New irons will be in the bag for next year
After hitting the DGS400s in the bay I am gonna yank those out for KBS Wedge shafts. I am too old to be slugging 130g shafts.
I also built the Mavrik TD last night to 46 inches. I am using the GDHD6x. The head weight is 188g and the swing weight is D3.5. My initial reactions to the club were not great as I didn’t really gain much with a half inch difference. We will see this weekend.
Funny thought about the s400. Loved them in RTX4 wedges. But grabbed a TM MG 50* wedge for the range this past weekend with DG Wedge flex shaft. Was a lot of fun and so much smoother.
