Looking to get a smoker for the house for a beginner. Looking for suggestions into what to get. Prefer a lp heat source one.

I have a Yoder which I love but def takes up a ton of space.

Now this is right up my alley. Rec tec 590 is the best all around IMHO. You'd need to spend double to get a traeger of equal quality. Green mountain is cheaper than rec tec, but still better than traeger. Also, you can look at the rec tec 700 if you want more space for larger quantity cooks, but honestly you might only need that a handful of times if you're having large parties.

For LP, you can get a nice vertical smoker with wood chips. They are kind of a pain if you want to maintain constant Temps though. Can't go wrong with the masterbuilt or pit boss if you're just starting out.

ssacks the lp makes sense because I have the line from my winter office heater that I am either going to put away or run to this. Most of the Temps I'll be cooking in is 60 degrees plus

I have so many questions.

What will you be smoking? Long cooks? Short cooks? A brisket can range from 8-20+hrs. Burgers maybe 1hr.
Do you want to babysit the smoker? (Watch the fire)
Why only Gas/electric? I assume that’s what LP source is?
Don’t buy thinking your a beginner. That period will die off quickly. Always look ahead, more than you need size wise. #4 is more a statement 😂
Pellets/chunks/chips/splits, what’s readily available to you?

I’ve smoked on a Treager before, years ago. Didn’t like it. Wanted more control over the fire.

If you ever want to go offset style, I’ve got a shit load of recommendations. I’ll help in any way I can.

Be careful though, you might fall in love with it 🤙

bigjohntripod just small smoking. I hate leftovers. Mostly something for chicken wings and fish in small batches. I don't have the time for the long smokes at this point and just kind of want to set it and forget.

Don’t over think it. Something like the Green Egg will do everything you need. It’s easy. You can do what you want, on your terms.

Keep it simple. Don’t need a fancy rig. TV has made it a major production with this, that, and the other and competitions and food trucks and startups, etc. For a dude in his backyard, who wants it simple and versatile, there are plenty of good options out there. I’m and Egg guy.

I am a kamado grill owner and I love the versatility of the grill. Smoking is very efficient with one in terms of charcoal used. Although there is a bit of a learning curve in the beginning with smoking and temperature control, its becomes easy to keep things on temp, especially if you have some Bluetooth thermometers. The best part though is it can also produce a ripping hot fire and sear steaks at 700 degrees. They are also ceramic and made to last forever.
