Prairie Dunes. Part 2

With Caprock behind us what could top that? How about the playing the 25th ranked course in the country, Prairie Dunes. The only problem was it was 7.5 hours away. We drove 3.5 hours after another 36 at Caprock and spent the night in Kearney. The next morning we left at 5am to go to PD.

Stepping onto the property you had a sense that there was history all around you. It wasn’t stuffy like some of the other old school private courses but it was unique. The hallways were filled with members items and past champions. The lockers were adorned with the Yucca logo.

Onto the first tee. This was a much different course than the wide open Caprock. If you missed it out here you weren’t looking for your ball.

The first few holes have a mix of get able holes with some challenging holes. You can’t get complacent out here or you lose your focus and your ProV1.

7 is the only par 5 on the front and it normally plays down wind so it’s your last scoring chance until the back 9

The back 9 starts off on a 165 yard par 3. It doesn’t sound that intimidating until you turn around and notice the members having lunch inside watching you lose another golf ball. I think the back 9 has some of the best views on the course. There are a mix of really hard holes and short score able holes.

This is my favorite view. This is from the 16th tee overlooking the 14th and 15th green.

17 is another reachable par 5 but it’s a very tight approach into a tricky green. 18 may look tame but the green is waiting to make you foolish

We did 36 and 18 at PD and finished the first night with some great food. Of course @Putterho had to get the tomahawk because his Seminoles were playing.

We ended the first night looking at the 18th green and talking about how many balls we lost and what we would do tomorrow.

This is what Tees&Coins is about and I can’t wait to do another trip again.

For the record after pulling a Fred Flinstone with the Tomahawk, the Noles did find some life and made for an exciting finish with McKenzie Milton at center!

Tbh, only golf digest puts it as low as 25. It’s bounced around top 12-20 on most of the other rankings. 🙂

I love prairie dunes but caprock is the routing I replay in my mind before drifting asleep.

Looks like the locker room got an upgrade since I was there last.
I like how it’s a boring drive in from the airport; all of a sudden the dunes appear and you turn onto the property. Bag guys, pro shop folks, and restaurant staff are incredible. Almost up there with Sand Hills (SH is kinda in a league of its own).
