This is a story only you guys would possibly care about, because no one I played with that day was impressed.
I typically build my bag around playing my home course, which is linkish with a lot of wind.
When the redesign happened, Fazio took a short par 4 and par 3 and combined it into a par 5. So it's a hole that is almost always into the wind, and from back tees, will play anywhere from 500-540, then add wind. From the tips, it's almost 600.
But the problem is the fairway runs out from 230 in, and it's all water to an island green. There's a layup bailout area on the right side, but who cares.
I've played the whole almost 100 times, and I've never birdied the hole. It's maddening.
After this weekend, I've still yet to birdie the hole. But there's a story behind it.
When building my SIM 3 wood, I've had two goals in mind.
1) to be able to use it as a goto club off the tee, and
2) to be able to birdie this damn hole.
So while I could put a lower launching shaft to really maximize distance, I've been looking for a mid shaft.
I've had the VR7 in the club, and Saturday was the day of reckoning.
While I really actually enjoy the stock shaft, I've hit into this hole on two occasions where the wind grabs the ball, and totally kills it mid-air. If I did not play such a windy course, I probably would've kept playing the stock shaft.
Hit a cut drive, slightly heeled it, landed in the first cut.
246 to the pin, slight into the wind. This was the moment I waited for. Told my playing partner to film this, because this was going to be the shot that kept vr in the bag or would have me ordering something else by the next hole.
It was a good strike, not driving range pure, but on course good enough.
Landed about 15ft short of the middle pin, released with the right sloping contour of the green.
3cups right to left, 12 footer.
Canned it.
so I still haven’t birdied the hole, but I’ll take the eagle gladly.
Went out in 35, and still ecstatic that I had conquered the 8th hole, and probably because I was walking in 100 degree heat, shit the bed on the back, but hey that’s why I’m an amateur lol.
