I'm about to completely overhaul my wedges and was wondering if anyone had any experience swapping out their set PW for a Vokey 46. My current setup is PW 46 (718 AP2), GW 52* (MackDaddy), SW 56* (MackDaddy) and LW 62* (Vokey SM7). My thoughts are to go with SM8's in 50F, 54D, and 58*D for more consistent gapping and more bounce on the higher lofts as i tend to hit wedges with a steep angle of attack.
kyledrum2002 I've done it a couple times over the years, and usually end up going back to my set's PW over the Vokey. I love the 50* vokey as my gap wedge, but for some reason when it gets down the 46* vs my PW, my PW is typically more consistent and feels better as I'm used to hitting the set makeup in the 3-9. My suggestion is to pick up a gently used 46* and give it a try for about 5 rounds. You should know fairly quickly if you prefer it over your PW.
I think it comes down to what you're trying to do (flight, distance, apex, etc).
How far do you hit your current PW? do you know your apex? What are you trying to do with trajectory? what type of shots do you hit with PW most common?
I will tell you now the Vokey at the same loft as your PW will not fly as far. I have been through this numerous times with customers.
dphatt this 100%. I have yet to find a 46* vokey that went as far as my 46* PW in any set I've played.
I can compare my 680MB 48* PW to a RTX4 48* wedge. I'd say the set wedge goes a bit further and launches slightly higher. The speciality wedge is really nice to chip with.
If you put a gun to my head, gave me a 46° Vokey, and said, “hit the ball 135 yards or I’ll kill you”. I’d be super dead 😂😂😂. I also play a 44° PW 😂😂
bigjohntripod haha!!
@dphatt yup. I am currently playing a vokey 46* vs my Miura Mb 101. My issue is I have a gap in yardages no matter which direction I go. Play the Vokey PW and gap too large between 9-PW, Play the set PW and have too large a gap between PW-GW.
